From Breakfast in Bed to Birdhouses in Trees

Our adventure began when we moved to New Zealand, chasing the dream of raising our kids surrounded by the stunning natural beauty this country offers. After starting out in suburban Wellington, we were drawn to the more rural side of life, where we spent countless mornings watching the birds turn our garden into their own personal playground.

One unforgettable Mother’s Day, I woke up to breakfast in bed and the most thoughtful gift: three handcrafted butterfly and birdhouses, made by my children. My eldest admitted she had struggled to find a design that truly suited the birds in our garden, and though she was proud of her work, it got us thinking. With a cup of coffee in hand and the view of our 40-year-old trees outside, I had an “aha!” moment. I turned to my husband and suggested that, with his engineering expertise and the help of our wonderful neighbor, we could design birdhouses that were actually made for birds, not just to look pretty in our yards.

What started as a simple idea quickly turned into weeks of designing, prototyping, and—let’s be honest—a bit of chaos with freshly sawn lumber drying in our dining room! But eventually, our first birdhouses were ready, sitting proudly on the workbench, awaiting their debut among our trees.

It’s been a wild learning curve as we’ve explored what birds truly need to feel safe and at home. While we’re still learning and consulting with conservation specialists, we’re incredibly proud of what we’ve created. Our birdhouses are crafted with the birds’ comfort and safety in mind, and we hope they help attract more native species, giving everyone a chance to play a part in New Zealand’s incredible natural ecosystem. Our goal is simple: to create a little haven for birds to thrive, while helping people connect with and protect the wildlife around them.
