Wood Curving

Making better brd homes

While no bird box can guarantee a flurry of hatchlings each spring, after all, nature doesn’t always work that way, we’ve done everything possible to give native bird families the best chance at a safe home.

By incorporating the latest research from scientists and ornithologists in Aotearoa, Europe, and the Americas, we’re exploring exciting new concepts. Here are some of the key features we have integrated into our products to enhance your chances of a successful nest.

Natural Timber

Our birdboxes are handcrafted from natural macrocarpa, sustainably harvested from our neighbour's forest, just across the road. No glue, paint or oils, just natural wood that can withstand the weather without any additional finishes.

Native Bird Friendly

Our bird-friendly design is at the heart of who we are. With entry holes sized to welcome native birds and rough textures that mimic natural tree cavities, our nest boxes invite birds to settle in and make a home.

Drain Tracks

A deep rear overhang keeps rain out, while additional drainage grooves below the roof divert any water that clings to the edges. These features help protect the nest, keeping it dry and healthy, even in wet weather.

Recycle.jpg

Waste free

Wood is a prescious resource. We even reuse our shavings to help you create a warm and cosy nest space. Offcuts and scrap are used in prototypes, with smaller bits added to a fire to slowly dry timber for future nest boxes.

Ventilation.jpg

Ventilation

With ventilation holes under the roof and in the floor, the right amount of air can circulate under the nest and in the box, keeping the nest healthy and fresh.

Recessed base

The base is recessed from the edges, making sure that any water that reaches the edges of the box can't percolate through gaps and make the nest all soggy and cold from underneath.

local.jpg

Local

Keeping it super local! All our timber is grown, milled, and dried just 2km from our workshop. We’re all about supporting local and keeping it eco-friendly, right down to the packaging whenever we can.

Sturdy Shelter

Each nest box is crafted from 18mm thick solid timber on all sides, keeping nests well-protected against the elements and providing a cozy, quiet shelter in winter and a cool retreat in summer to keep chicks safe from overheating.

Ladder.jpg

Internal Ladder

When they grow, our nestlings are going to have to climb to the hole to make their first flight and make their bid for freedom. To give them a hand up, our designs feature an internal ladder to let tiny birds climb up to their exit.

mount.jpg

Easy Mounting

Our brd homes are designed with both safety and convenience in mind. Each one is securely screwed together and easily slots onto an interlocking mount, keeping it secure, safe and easy to maintain.

Overhang.jpg

Overhang

Our brd homes are designed with a deep overhang that not only enhances their safety and warmth but also helps keep rain at bay, keening our nest dry and cozy whist making it really tricky for many of the predators.

Rough Finish

All our nestboxes have a rough sawn finish. Not only does this help blend the box into its natural environment, but it allows the birds to grip the surface and makes them feel more at home. It's like being inside a tree, except safer!

Predator2.jpg

Predator Proof

With deep overhangs and protective features, our designs keep nest invaders out. We’re continually refining our approach and collaborating with leading conservation experts to create homes Aotearoa’s birds truly feel safe in

joint-b.jpg

Recessed Joints

Our brd nestboxes are crafted with interlocking mortise joints, just like many of our own homes. This design keeps the nest dry, windproof, and quiet, creating a perfect environment for birds to raise their young and for hatchlings to thrive.

perch.jpg

Integrated Perch

Nope, nestboxes no longer have a stick on the front for the bird to perch. They will often fly straight into the hole, but a grooved perch offers less opportunity for predators to get a grip and attack the nest.

NZ made

Everything is designed and made in our home workshop right here in Aotearoa, just north of Wellington. Surrounded and inspired by the same wildlife that we're trying to support.
