The Deck is our feeder station and nesting platform for birds who prefer a more open setup. It offers a sturdy platform and a roof for shelter, keeping out the worst of the weather and providing shade on hot days. The 360-degree lip is there to keep nests and eggs secure in high winds and make sure adventurous chicks stay safe!

For the best results, place The Deck in a tree about 5 meters or higher (please be careful or get professional help!). Lots of birds love this open-air real estate. Many native birds, like Tui and Kererū, didn’t evolve with climbing mammal predators, so they’re not always drawn to enclosed spaces. This platform gives them the perfect spot to build a nest, with a solid start and plenty of room for successful breeding.

The Deck also doubles as a feeder station, perfect for attracting everything from hungry Tui and Wood Pigeons to smaller birds that love to gather. It’s designed with drainage channels to prevent pooling, making it super easy to clean—just a quick hose down will do!

Place it up high, and it’s also great for shelf-nesting birds who like a bit of open space but still need a sturdy, weather-protected spot. Extra ventilation underneath keeps things fresh, letting out water and any spills that might find their way in.

Built with the same care and local, natural timber as our other nest boxes, The Deck is a fantastic way to welcome birdlife into your garden.

Our nest boxes are crafted using research from bird experts, universities, and conservation centers in Aotearoa and beyond, all designed to give birds the best shot at building a successful, cozy nest. Want to see more details? Check them out here.

And remember, even though this platform is aimed at specific species, birds are always full of surprises. You might find an unexpected visitor sets up home instead, but whoever moves in, enjoy their company, nurture them, and celebrate when their little ones take their first wobbly flights.

  • Our nest boxes are made from natural, rough-sawn macrocarpa timber, so no two are exactly alike. You’ll see unique grain patterns, textures, knots, and color variations that add to their charm. We keep the rough-sawn finish unsanded to a create a natural feel and a cozy spot for the birds. This does mean the surface might feel a bit rough or uneven, but that’s all part of the rustic appeal if you happen to have feathers.

Macrocarpa is super durable outdoors, but over time, it may weather with some surface splits and a shift in color to a beautiful silver-grey. It’s all part of nature doing its thing!
